Main Thought:
We know so little, but we expect God to do what we desire. Instead, let us confess our ignorance and trust the Lord who is our refuge. On this day we also commemorate Jacob, whose faithful life had times of weakness.
Psalm 73:21–28
When my soul was embittered,
when I was pricked in heart,
I was brutish and ignorant;
I was like a beast toward you.
Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
you hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will receive me to glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
For behold, those who are far from you shall perish;
you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.
But for me it is good to be near God;
I have made the Lord God my refuge,
that I may tell of all your works.
Prayer
Lord, our God, You have a counsel of mercy over us by which You desire to lead us to those mansions prepared for us by Jesus, our Savior. You see that we are ignorant, and often know not what is for our good. By Your grace restrain us from thrusting our hand into Your clockwork and thwarting Your counsel. In all things grant us resignation to Your will, that we may reach the home of the soul with Christ, our Lord. Amen.
A prayer for the commemoration of Patriarch Jacob
Lord Jesus, scepter that rises out of Jacob, Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, rule our hearts through Your suffering cross and forgive us our sins, that we may become partakers of Your divine life; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
